Exploring Healthy Human Culture

Even the name feels like a medicine, a process of transformation.  By creating that possibility, I am moving in that direction…  What does it mean, a Healthy Human Culture?  What does it mean for you, have you experienced it?  Can you image it, dream it?

Beyond that kind of natural, perhaps evident thing, Healthy Human Culture (HHC) is a set of understandings and practices developed, channelled, coalesced by Sophy Banks “that help create relationships, communities and societies where all can thrive. It explains why people so often create harm even when they don’t mean to, and how we can address this with effective and compassionate action.”  The way I’ve received it, HHC explores the ecology of trauma—or, rather, of the ways our bodies respond to the ever-changing, often-challenging environment around us.  At its core we find polyvagal theory, a beautifully positive approach to our functioning nervous system.  From there, it becomes almost inevitable to see how the macro reflects the micro, how the individual responses are happening at larger levels of complexity.  The society, our community, having similar behavioural responses to shock and pain.

One thing that I find simply awesome about this way of looking at our place in the world, is that it brings so much agency… each of us having the inner, biological, ecological wisdom to move towards health.  Imagine… how much health eight billion beings can generate…

I know so many who are working towards bringing health to our cultures… and I start to know more and more about cultures where health has been kept better than in my own.  I invite you to experience and explore this set of maps, of practices, of possibilities.  I’m so very happy to be offering this with Theresa Fend, and how we embed even the creation of these sessions in our understanding of healthy human culture. This time we explored the returnpathiness of Disco-Dancing.
